The Importance of Tire Treads

October 25th, 2010 by admin

How do you know if the treads on your tires are worn out? According to most states’ laws, including Maine, tires are legally worn out when only 2/32” (1/16”) remains of the tread.  At that point your tires will no longer perform as they should in rain and snow.  Tires sold in North America are required to contain indicators called ‘wear bars’ that run horizontally across the tire face.  Be sure to check your tires regularly for any sign of wear bars.

Depending on the conditions you normally drive in, however, you may want greater than 2/32” tread depth.  For example, if you frequently drive in snow conditions, you may want to consider replacing your tires when they reach 6/32” of tread depth. Because your wear bars won’t show up until 2/32” depth, another way to check your treads is with a penny.  Place a penny into several tread grooves.  If the top of the Lincoln Memorial is always covered by the tread, you have more than 6/32” of tread depth remaining.  If not, it’s time to invest in a set of new tires.
