My credit counselor suggested debt settlement

If your credit counselor has suggested a debt management program, this typically will mean that you will be dealing with a credit card debt settlement firm. Your counselor will work directly with your creditors on your behalf as well as provide you with additional education, guidance, and motivation to make sure you stick with your plan and pay down your debt. While debt management services may save you money by working with creditors to lower interest rates, they typically do not negotiate with creditors to pay less than the total principal amount owed. You will send in a single payment each month to your debt settlement firm and they will pay the appropriate amount to each creditor, on-time and consistently. Credit counselors only recommend debt settlement in very unique situations.
